It was March 13, 2004. There were 4 Mustangs and a small, but dedicated group of people who came out to the first meeting at Bert’s 50’s Diner in Mechanicsville, Maryland. They met there that day to share in fellowship and enjoyment of America’s original Pony Car. While there are many organizations throughout the United States dedicated to the Ford Mustang, but these people wanted something unique to the three counties that make up Southern Maryland.

August 23, 2004 saw our very first cruise through the beautiful Southern Maryland Countryside. Even though Mother Nature decided our cars needed to be washed during the cruise, we still had a great time.

On September 25, 2004 we held our first Mustang and Ford show in La Plata, Maryland. 29 cars came out and Mother Nature must have felt bad about raining on our cruise, because the weather was absolutely perfect. Folks came from as far away as Laurel, Maryland and Vienna, Virginia. Best of all, two very deserving organizations, Greyt Expectation Greyhound Rescue and the Charles County Humane Society were able to benefit from our show, thanks to the help of our sponsor, Hunt Ford Mercury and the many folks who displayed their beautiful Fords!

Our first activity for 2005 was the IceBreaker Cruise, to celebrate the arrival of Spring. As with the arrival of Spring, so must come the rains. Sure enough, the rains did cause us to reschedule our cruise from April 2 to April 9. Waiting a week proved to be a wise decision, as we were greeted with beautiful weather.

June 18, 2005 saw our first annual club cookout and pool party at President Greg Whitman’s home. It was a nice change of pace and let’s face it, nothing compares to burgers cooked over an open flame!

We received an invitation from the Southern Maryland Boys and Girls Club invited us to display our cars at their Annual Punkin Chunkin at Serenity Farms in Benedict, Maryland. Despite the heat, we had several cars there. Speaking of the heat, we want to thank the Benedict Volunteer Fire Department for bringing their tanker to keep us cool! The event went so well, they have asked us to return!

September 24, 2005 saw the Second Annual Mustang and Ford Show in La Plata. This show was bigger and better than the first, with a total of 49 Ford, Mercury and Lincoln vehicles. Once again, the show was a huge success, not only for us, but for Greyt Expectations Greyhound Rescue and The Southern Maryland Food Bank. Anyone displaying a vehicle was required to donate food to the food bank and spectators were asked to make a donation. The response was outstanding. A total of 249 pounds of food was donated to the food bank!

November 12, 2005 we held our first Before the Stable Cruise. We met and cruised to Tappahannock, Virginia for a wonderful lunch. Once again, a beautiful cruise and a beautiful route!

Since that first meeting, our membership has grown. There have been many great friendships formed and the future continues to look bright. If you would like to know more, please drop us a line at info@somdmustang.org
