It was
March 13, 2004. There were four Mustangs and a
small but dedicated group of people who came out to the first meeting at Berts Diner in Mechanicsville, Maryland.
They met there that day to share in fellowship and enjoyment of Americas original Pony Car. While there are many
organizations throughout the United States dedicated to the Ford Mustang these people wanted something unique to
the three counties that make up Southern Maryland.
August
23, 2004 saw our very first
cruise through the beautiful Southern Maryland countryside. Even though
Mother Nature decided our cars needed to be washed during the cruise, we still
had a great time.
On
September 25, 2004, we held our
First
Mustang and Ford Show in La Plata, Maryland. Twenty-nine cars came out and Mother
Nature must have felt bad about raining on our cruise, because the weather was
absolutely perfect. Folks came from as far away as Laurel, Maryland and Vienna,
Virginia. Best of all, two very deserving organizations, Greyt Expectation
Greyhound Rescue and the Charles County Humane Society were able to benefit
from our show, thanks to the help of our sponsor, Hunt Ford Mercury and the
many folks who displayed their beautiful Fords!
Our first
activity for 2005 was the IceBreaker
Cruise, to celebrate the arrival of Spring. As with the arrival of Spring,
so must come the rains. Sure enough, the rains did cause us to reschedule our
cruise from April 2 to April 9. Waiting a week proved to be a wise decision, as
we were greeted with beautiful weather.
On June 18,
2005, we held our first annual club cookout and pool party at then President Greg
Whitmans home. Nothing compares to burgers and dogs cooked over an open flame!
We
received an invitation from the Southern Maryland Boys and Girls Club invited
us to display our cars at their Annual Punkin Chunkin at
Serenity Farms in Benedict, Maryland. Despite the heat, we had several cars
to show. Speaking of the heat, we want to thank the Benedict Volunteer Fire
Department for bringing their tanker to keep us cool! The event went so well,
they have asked us to return!
September
24, 2005 saw the Second Annual Mustang and Ford Show in La Plata. This show was
bigger and better than the first, with a total of 49 Ford, Mercury and Lincoln
vehicles. Once again, the show was a huge success, not only for us, but for
Greyt Expectations Greyhound Rescue and the Southern Maryland Food Bank. Anyone
displaying a vehicle was required to donate food to the food bank and
spectators were asked to make a donation. The response was outstanding. A total
of 249 pounds of food was donated to the food bank!
November
2005, we held our first Before the Stable Cruise. We cruised to
Tappahannock, Virginia for a wonderful lunch. Once again, a beautiful cruise
and a beautiful route!
The folowing years
saw us getting bigger and better! We continued the Hunt Ford Show in the fall
making it an annual event that many Ford lovers look forward to! The number of
participants, as well as the amount of support that we are able to provide our
charities continues to increase at this show. In 2007, we added The Ace
Hardware Car Show to our calendar. Held annually in the spring, in southern
Calvert County, this show helps us to more fully incorporate our entire
membership area, while continuing to support our charities, and expanding our
membership base.
We are
always on the move; whether we are enjoying one of several club cruises during
the year, the Get Out Of The Cold
event at Maryland International Raceway,
participating in various car shows and events sponsored by other clubs or
organizations, organizing and holding our own car shows and fundraisers, eating
way too much at our annual summer picnic, or just shooting the breeze at our
monthly business meetings.
In September 2008, we participated in the Patuxent River Appreciation Day (PRAD) Parade on Solomons Island for the first time, adding a new annual event to our calendar. November 2008 found us again in Leonardtown, honoring our Servicemen and women in the annual Leonardtown Veteran's Day Parade.
In the spirit of the holiday season, we held food drives to help support the Southern Maryland Food Bank with one in California and one in LaPlata. Both were a great success and much food and monies were raised to help those in need.
We closed out 2008 with our first ever Christmas Party held at the home of our club's president, John Tierney. The food was fantastic and the company even better! The hospitality of John and his family was enjoyed and appreciated by all. New Year's Day 2009 found us continuing a newly started annual cruise tradition. Taking a scenic drive to Tappahannock, Virginia, we had lunch at Lowery's Seafood Restaurant. As the Super Bowl kickoff approached, we came out and cruised St. Mary's and Calvert Counties aftering having lunch at Bear Creek B-B-Q. We crossed the Patuxent River twice on a beautiful day. Never a dull moment (or an empty stomach) in this club!!!
This year, 2010, has found us busier than ever! We enjoyed our annual New Year's Day Cruise to Lowery's Restaurant in Tappahannock, Virginia to start the year off right and began having weekly dinner/cruise-in nights at various local restaurants, for which the date/time/place are always announced on our homepage.
We celebrated our club's birthday in March 2010 with a great cruise to Chesapeake Beach and dinner at the Rod 'n' Reel Restaurant!!
In April, we held our annual Spring ALL FORD Car/Truck Show in Lusby which was so much fun and our most successful yet! Thanks to the hard work of the folks on our car show committee, we were able to give donations to the Southern Maryland Food Bank and the Second Hope Rescue.
We were invited to the customer appreciation days at the Crabby Oyster Restaurant in Virginia, and a large herd of our ponies made their way across the bridge for that one, to enjoy great hospitality and excellent food!!! Some of our members enjoyed the festivities at the Mustang cruise and show in Ocean City in May, and we are gearing up to participate in the Cobb Island Days parade in June, which will be a busy month as some of our members will also be going to Carlisle, Pennsylvania for the All Ford event there in June.
We are currently in the process of planning our annual summer picnic, which is traditionally held in August, and beginning to prepare for our Annual Fall Car show in Charles County to be held in September.
Our members get together whenever they can; maybe at the weekly cruise-ins in Leonardtown or Prince Frederick, local car shows, or a Friday night at the race track! We just post up local events on the club website, and away we go! We also meet the 1st Saturday morning of each month for "Cars and Coffee" at the Wawa in Charlotte Hall, and of course, there are always our monthly business meetings which are held at the library in Charlotte Hall as well. This club has something for everyone!!! Come out and enjoy the fun!
